Security Message for US Citizens: Police Attacked in Northern Bogota

On Wednesday, December 28, 2016, at approximately 9:00 pm, unidentified assailants on a motorcycle attacked Colombian National Police (CNP) officers in the vicinity of Carrera 7 and Calle 200 in Bogota with firearms and explosives, killing one CNP officer and injuring four others. The perpetrators have not been apprehended.

In response, CNP has closed Carrera 7 in the area of the attack and increased police presence at police stations, government buildings, and throughout Bogota. CNP has also cleared vehicles parked around government buildings and begun sweeping these areas for explosives.

U.S. citizens should be especially vigilant, especially when around police or other Colombian government facilities. U.S. citizens should expect increased police checkpoints in Bogota and along roads leading in and out of Bogota.

The Embassy operates a Consular Agency in Barranquilla, Colombia which also provides assistance to U.S. citizens. The Barranquilla Consular Agency is located at Calle 77B No. 57-141, suite 511, tel. (575) 353-2001. Hours are 8:00 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday. You can schedule a non-emergency service by calling the Consular Agency.
