Are You Now or Have You Ever Been a Salsa Dancer?

I had a feeling I would end up having to learn to dance salsa at some point over the course of a year in Colombia. I believe that moment is approaching.

I've never been much of a dancer (cue jokes) but I've always vaguely wanted to at least be able to do SOMETHING on the dance floor besides try to sneak off it. However, salsa still intimidates me a little. And little did I know when I began dating my girlfriend that not only does she love dancing salsa, as is par for the course with Colombianas, she is a fanatical salsa lover. She wages holy war over salsa. For example, we were on that boat ride around the lake in Guatape, and they were playing Celia Cruz the whole time. And none of the two dozen Colombians on the boat were dancing. My girlfriend was genuinely saddened by the sight of 20 of her countrymen sitting down while salsa was playing. She found another salsa-loving woman on the boat, and proceeded to cheerlead/shame the Colombians into getting on the floor.

I suppose I'll just have her give me private lessons until I feel comfortable enough to give it a go in front of a large crowd. Anyone else given salsa a whirl after getting to Colombia?
