Prostitution and police shakedowns

The question in another thread has to do with the new code that enables a very costly fine if caught exercising prostitution outside established zones. A second part of that question is if the police can use this new code to continue (or even increase) their routine shakedowns of gringos. The third part of that question is if there are indeed situations when it is best for gringos to stay away from other gringos.

In the first part, quite frankly I don´t see established zones of prostitution.....they are everywhere......ranging from hanging out at the doors of cheap hotels all the way up to frequenting the late night bars at five-star hotels.

Second part.......hell yes there is police corruption, rampant. Have a fender bender and don´t want to get trapped in the maze? Hand the cop a 50,000 and drive off. Caught with a joint in the park? No problem, hand the cop a 50,000 and walk away. Caught with a 17 year old girl in your hotel room? No problem, hand the cop 600,000 and he walks away and leaves the girl in the room with the gringo. These are three real instances I´ve heard first hand from the gringos involved.

Third part.....why steer clear of certain gringos? Because some of them are bitter and hateful and the sort of people you go out of your way to avoid.......Some of them might actually be sex tourists and you don´t want to get tarred by their brush....Some of them are mentally unbalanced and a danger to themselves and anyone around them. That was the case a few years ago when one insane expat was starting fights on the forums then riding a moto all over Colombia fire bombing houses.

These are all just my opinions, and I´m only repeating stories I know first hand were true.
