Choosing Colombia; After the first decade

I decided to retire and live in Colombia in 2009. Now I am ready to celebrate my tenth anniversary.

These are the 10 reasons I chose Colombia.

Climate, its not perfect but beats the hell of the extremes in the US where I used to live. My sweet spot is 1500 meters elevation. No air conditioning, no heat, but I do insist on hot water in my shower.

Low cost of living, not perfect, but enables me to live on $1000 USD per months without stress and I bank the rest of it.

Friendly people. Not perfect, but a damn sight better than the politically uptight neighbors I had in US before i retired.

Stress free, vegetarian lifestyle. I'm only 5 minutes walk from the vegetable and fruit market extraordinary. Wow, nothing even comes close to this in the US.

I don't need a car. The public transportation goes everywhere... cheaply and quickly.

Pretty, slender women. I am so turned off by fat women in the US. Here in Colombia I am amazed, at every bus stop and cafe I see a dozen more beautiful, slender women.They are decades younger than me but they still want to date me. Maybe it´s a money thing, but that's okay with me. I love youth and beauty and am willing to pay what it costs.

Easy language. We all grew up on westerns that had Spanish speaking characters. It´s simple to grow your skills and become fluent in just a few short years.

Easy flights. Only 3 or 4 hours from major US air terminals. Lots of direct flight options.

Easy Visa. Wow, it really doesn't´get any better than this. First six months are free, then following three year visa costs you a whopping $100 annually.

Finding your ideal place in the sun. Whether you want to live within shouting distance of crashing surf on the beach, or in a valley with fertile farms all around you, or in the mountains with fantastic vistas and fresh breezes, there is a place for you in Colombia.
