The Ibague Suicide Tragedy

Today's Spanish phrase is "gota a gota" which translates in English to "drop by drop".

By now most of you have seen the tragic story of the 32 year old single mother in Ibague, Colombia who jumped to her death with her 10 year old son in her arms. She did this in part because she was unable to repay some "gota a gota" loans which my wife tells me is the equivalent of dealing with "loan sharks" in the US. Above is a link to one of many news stories about it.

My wife from Cali has been saddened by the story and she found the Facebook page of the dead mother. She showed me her photos last night. She was very beautiful and she was my type. I haven't been able to find that Facebook page to post it here; maybe someone else here will find it and post the link. She also showed me a photo of her ex-boyfriend, who was not the child's father. He looked to be about 50 and is straight up ugly in my book. The creep left her for another woman (that boggles my mind) and she couldn't pay her bills which led to her desperation.

When I first went to Cali a lady working in the marriage agency where I was staying asked me to pick out the women I would like to meet from their book of profiles. When she saw the ones I picked she said "You like trigueƱas." That word means the color of wheat. I'm not sure if that's a good characterization, but I like the sound of that word. The dead woman would probably be considered trigueƱa. Yum, yum. Any way, if the time had been right I would've gladly helped her repay her loans "gota a gota". (wink, wink) What a waste; and what a tragedy that she didn't give her son to someone else.
