I brought up getting a visa in another thread. I've done a lot of research on the subject since and have some questions if that's OK.

My initial thought was to do the legwork and obtain a visa in the US before moving to Colombia. The reason for that was to be able to open a bank account and get health insurance quickly. However, I'm rethinking that and think I may be able to wait until I'm there. It seems like it may be easier.

How much legwork is involved in getting it while living in Medellin? Like, getting an apostille on a SS benefit, translated? Is that a simple matter? It is a bit of a hassle if I do it on my own in the US. And I'm not sure if I need the apostille for the translated benefits letter, something that may be difficult in the US. And how much time would it take?

I visited the Colombian consulate in NYC today to get info about this. Getting info from them through email is nearly impossible. But my head was spinning after I left the consulate.
