Getting Apostille in the US

I thought I'd give back a little for all the help I've gotten here.

I was stuck for a while on how to go about getting my SS Benefit Letter apostilled. The main issue I had, or so I thought, was getting a signed SS benefits letter. The one obtained from the SSA website is unsigned. Everything I read online states that this must be signed.

That turned out not to be true. The whole process was simple and took a little over an hour and cost $13 - $3 for a notary authentication and $10 for the Apostille.

You need to have the SS letter notarized - the notary will provide a statement which you sign and they notarize. It then needs to be authenticated by the County Clerk's office (or similar such office depending on the state). Then, go with a check for $10 to the Dept. of State where they provide apostille services.

In NYC, the County Clerk's office is near the NYS DOS, so that limits the running around. The County Clerk in NYC notarizes for free and authenticates for $3. This took 5 minutes Take the notarized document to the DOS.

If it wasn't for a line at security to get into the NYS DOS (located in the NYS Supreme Court Building), the entire process would have taken 40 minutes.
