Organic in Colombia

I was a certified organic farmer in the USA for 25 years and have studied this question a lot.

The term Organic as it applies to food means to be grown without synthetic chemicals such as pesticides, insecticides, rodenticides, herbicides, fertilizers, soil conditioners, growth hormones and so forth.

Organic farming is not happening here in Colombia, at least in the several states where I have lived over the past ten years. All the pueblos have several stores selling large bags of these chemicals and the farmers use them as needed.

The fruits and vegetables and meats and poultry we see for sale here in Colombia has been grown with the use of synthetics. A lot of the food we buy is homegrown on small farms, but not organically grown.

In the USA and Europe and Asia and most developed countries there are organic certification standards, some are set by industry and some are set by governmental.

In the USA organic certification started as an industry measure about 60 years ago and was taken over by the US Department of Agriculture about 30 years ago.
