I asked a simple question on the Facebook Medellin Expat group and started a world war. I simply asked why the difference in taste from the milk in Colombia as compared to the US and why some milk is sold as an 8-pack, unrefrigerated. Same deal with eggs. The first person who responded called me a troll. WTF is a troll anyway? And then the war pursued. The Euro vs. the American vs. the Australian trash with some paisas yelling at all gringos. It was actually very funny. Bottom line, countries process foods differently and the pasteurization process is different. If you’re looking for an answer as to which is the healthiest milk, don’t look for an answer on FB. Of course, nationalism prevailed. [I basically quit FB some years ago and only became active again to join Colombian groups.]

The rainy season is over, YAY. Good riddance to May. The misty early morning drizzle disappeared. Mornings and evenings are perfect. And I stopped carrying my fold up umbrella in my backpack.

I finally went on the exotic fruit tour. Fruit is beloved in Medellin. The rich soil and temperate climate in this part of Colombia provides the perfect conditions for growing fruit 365 days a year. There are 3 major markets in Medellin. The tour was located at Plaza Minorista, alas, another place I got lost trying to find. Los vendedores are the heart and soul of the Minorista, which was originally constructed to house thousands of headstrong fruit merchants who refused orders to abandon their outdoor stalls in the nearby Plaza de Cisneros. So, the government built them a nice undercover marketplace instead.

An added bonus was being treated to the best arepa ever. The corn shucker (upside down video, sorry!) was in the stall next to the arepa ladies. The arepas couldn’t have been fresher as a result. Arepas are made from corn for the uninitiated. I didn’t understand why arepas were so beloved until I had a fresh arepa de choclo. I’m guessing most of the arepas I tried weren’t all that fresh.
