Manuela and I went to look at an apartment in Sabaneta today. Manuela was there for moral support, advice and translation if needed. All were needed. Sabaneta is small town just outside of Medellin, though I consider it Medellin since the metro stops there. Still, it’s a bit distant from the heart of town.

It wasn’t looking good. When we left Floresta (near where I live), it was sunny and hot. When we got to Sabaneta, there was a torrential rain. Look at the photos and the faces of the metro riders afraid to step outside the station! The rain finally calmed down and we met up with the landlord, crazy Gloria as I call her. Crazy mostly in a good way. She was born in Colombia, raised in the Bronx or Staten Island (I forget) and had a decidedly strange accent. She’s now in living full time in Sabaneta. It was like old friends re-uniting when we met. After all, we exchanged many WhatsApp voice messages and text messages.

The first thing she did was introduce us to a motley crew of Americans seemingly biding their time in a clubhouse and drinking beer. Was she trying to make me feel at home? Then we saw the apartment. Ohmygod, it was fantastic. Cheap, new, spacious, 2 balconies, overlooking Sabaneta Park AND, did I mention cheap? I left with the distinct feeling this may be it.

Then it was lunch at El Peregrion, home of the world famous buñuelo. Buñuelos
are fried tortillas with sugar and spice and everything nice. Ours was filled with cheese. Manuela’s eyes popping out of her head tell the whole story. Deciding factor whether to live there? Well, it certainly is reason enough. Leaving El Peregrion was rough. I mean that! Gloria gave me a subtle hint about where to find the cashier. And the waiter came to me as I was getting my change to tell me about 18 times that tips were not included. In perfect English.
