Buying a 4x4

Post New Topic

Hi

Plan on a 2 month trip around Columbia / Ecuador.

Would anyone have / know where I could buy a decent 4x4 eg Chevrolet Trooper / Toyota or?

Also, the steps to registering & insurance + a good Bogota mechanic.

I'm a classic car enthusiast, so any sun damaged 4x4 would be of interest. Don't mind minor rust / mechanical repairs but must be mechanically sound.

Any assistance would be most appreciated & welcomed via a Private Message..

Budget: US$1800 -3000

But this budget is a joke, isn't it?

Maybe it was a typo, and what was really meant was 18-30 million COP?

And even then...

For $3000 USD - that's roughly 10 million COP - you could hire a campero/guala and driver for two months, easy.

That's 5 million COP/month which is more than 90% of Colombians earn...throw in meals and lodging and they'd all be beating down your door to get your business. You would have no hassle of you being responsible for licensing, insurance etc.

You could advertise in Locanto in various bigger cities like here for Medellín:
https://medellin.locanto.com.co/

Or here, for Cali:
https://cali.locanto.com.co/

I'd place an ad under Trabajo, then under Empleo ocasional, and under Turismo, and under Otros trabajos,
wording it to specify what you want - I would not announce up front you are willing to pay up to 5 million COP/month but instead solicit bids from interested parties, and asking them to meet you in person in a public place with the vehicle.

And only offer to pay them weekly, that way in case something goes south you're only out $300 USD or so max if they take off after getting paid...

Most people outside of Colombia do not realize that new and used vehicles are much more expensive in Colombia than in the USA or Canada.

In Chinchina there is a street with a row of ancient Jeeps. I was talking to one Jeep owner in another town, his Jeep was older than me. He spends about as much time under it as in the driver's seat. He told me he would sell me the running old wreck for $2000. I told him I have enough trouble in my life.

j67 if you like unusual old cars take a look at this site. Some of the vehices shown are still around and for sale in some areas of Colombia.

If despite the sage advise offered by others here you still want to buy a 4x4 vehicle in Colombia I suggest a Renault Duster 4x4. The only thing that separates it from the likes of Landcrusers and Troopers is lack of a two speed transfer case but they have a granny first gear that will get you up most steep hills.
