Colombia vs. Slovenia

As some of you know from my previous posts my wife and I plan to spend 2 weeks in Colombia next February. It will be our first trip to Colombia. I had also previously mentioned that my dad and step-mom moved to Ecuador in late 2011 from the USA.

Before they decided to move to Ecuador they visited other countries trying to decide where to retire. They visited Slovenia and Croatia and liked both of those countries very much, in particular Slovenia but they both decided that they wanted a more temperate year round climate. They did not want a cold, snowy winter.

I however kind of like having 4 distinct seasons. I do not think that it is a requirement for me but at this stage in my thinking I would not rule out an area that does have 4 distinct seasons. I just am not wanting to live in Michigan (or similar climates) during retirement with the very cold temperatures and heavy snow at times in the winter.

The Slovenia forum gets very little use. I am just curious if any of you all have been to or considered Slovenia or Croatia. One advantage I see for me in those two European countries is that it looks like they get significantly less rain than many areas of Colombia or Panama or Ecuador.

I have not scrutinized cost of living differences yet and strongly suspect that Slovenia would be more expensive by a fair margin than Colombia but probably a fair margin cheaper than the USA still.
