Idleness is the root of mischief

For some reason there appears to be more moto-taxis in Santa Marta than any other city I have visited. You will always see some of them at the entrance to the Buena Vista Mall in Mamatoco. Many people in Santa Marta depend on moto-taxis so it has become an accepted illegal business.

Last week the city announced that that motorcycles could only carry a passenger on even days in order to reduce the spread of the corona virus. Now the moto-taxis have nothing to do on odd numbered days.

Have you heard the saying that “Idleness is the root of mischief” ?.

Yesterday morning, an odd numbered day, a gang of 25 or more moto-taxis went looting in Santa Marta. They hit three different stores in different areas of the city. There is a video clip that captures the moto-taxi gang doing the looting in this first link:

Now Santa Marta has brought in the Military to patrol the city of Santa Marta to prevent looting.

The city has now changed there mind and abolished the rule where motorcycles were not allowed to carry passengers on odd days. That is, moto-taxis can now go back to the business of carry passengers on all days instead of looting.

The city said that they changed the rules because the old ban does conform with the new Pico y Cedula shopping rules. Some people that can only shop on an odd numbered day will need to ride a moto-taxi to get to the store.
