In DR versus Colombia y mas

I got tired postponing my trips to Colombia so I decided to go to the Dominican Republic and that is where I am right now until Saturday.. It's an 8 day trip I started in Santa Domingo with a 2 hour bus ride to Los Terrenos and working my way along the North Coast until I got to Puerto Plata. I stumbled across this country some 30 years ago with my ex wife and it was certainly the wild west back then, and probably been back 6 or 7 times in the last 15 years. I considered it for retirement at 1 time until I came across Colombia. I thought it might be fun for us to compare the nations and also others can add additional country information as well . These are only my opinions and general observations so feel free to disagree.

They have just announced a closure of the beaches and stores and restaurants are not allowed to sell alcohol after 3:00 outside resorts.

The positive of this beautiful country is of course it's close to the USA and does in fact have beautiful beaches

I find the people here to be nice but more rude and less educated than Colombians.

I personally find Colombia winning on all accounts except beaches. Women, language, culture, weather, transportation and most of all cost of living. Taking Santo Domingo and Bogota out of the equation for comparison. Taxis are ridiculously expensive here and restaurants and grocery stores for me are about 25% more costly. I would say housing prices are about the same, although here you will need to have air conditioning. I think Colombian women are among the most charming in the world and definitely age better and tend to be educated and easier to converse with. I will say Dominican Spanish is vastly different, and while I can communicate on my own after taking lessons the last 14 months and do anything without the translator pretty much in Colombia, here it's difficult to communicate as accurately.

I personally think the Philippines as a great place to retire as well, but the plane ride it's just too much of a killer.

And all my visits and travels I think Colombia has among the best infrastructure of the emerging economy's.

I would be interested in other thoughts as we can hopefully move on to a new topic. I hope everyone stays well down there I saw the death toll was the highest ever the last few days.

I suspect I will be changing my July 1 trip there for the 3rd time and would appreciate other thoughts on the topic I posted here. I hope everyone stays healthy.
