Transito Changes

In the paper today it says the Depaartment of Transito has made some rule changes. One is that if your license expires between January first and thirty-first it's validity is extended for two years. No reason for this included in the article but one guess is they are trying to avoid a backlog. My license expiration happens to fall in that range. I don't imagine they will issue a new license with a new expiration date if back log is the issue. I'm guessing it will be "understood" by authorities. Some years ago I went for the revision mechanica and the guy at the gate said no they changed the date and you don't need to get it yet. Here is a paper describing the new rule you can show transito in case an agent is unaware of the change. So if they don't give you a new license with the new expiration date will they just give you a paper stating the new law to show if you're stopped? That would be all very well in Colombia but what if you want to travel to the US and rent a car? Good luck showing an expired license and a paper from Transito in Spanish to Avis or Alamo.

So I called Transito and explained my dilema and the woman said well that isn't law yet it's just proposed but I can give you an appointment to renew your license now if you want. I said yes thank you, do it.
