2022 tax rate

The value of the Colombian tax unit (UVT, Unidad de Valor Tributario) for 2022 has now been fixed at COP 38,004, an increase of 4.67% above the 2021 rate.

As the UVT is the basis of all Colombian tax computations, forum members who are deemed to have a Resident for tax purposes status (183 day presence rule) will be assessed as follows:

Taxable incomes above COP 41,424,360 p.a. = US$ 874 per month taxed at 19%.

Taxable incomes above COP 64,606,800 p.a = US$ 1,363 per month taxed at 28%.

The above tax implications are only valid for tax residents and, obviously, of no concern if the DIAN are unable for one reason or another to apply them.

A point to note is that one of the major attractions for many expats in coming to Colombia is their local “cost of living” is seen as favourable in comparison with their home nation because of the US$/COP exchange rate. In this context, the US$/COP rate has recently topped to 4,000, just about its highest ever, and expats welcome this. However, it must not be forgotten that 28%, or more, of this “bonus” disappears to the taxman as your taxable incomes rise in parallel if you are a resident.
