1st take away from 2021

In a few minutes we shall be finished with 2021, leaving only the financial closing bureaucracy to deal with. Here are a few of the 2021 financial accomplishments I have noted so far.

Exchange Rates – Colombian Peso weakness as usual:
Cop versus US$ - down 19.14%
COP versus British Pound – down 17.94%
COP versus Euro – down 9.71%
No real surprises; follows trend over more than 10 years.

Stock Market investments – Colombian shares do worse than wider markets:
S & P 500 – Up 27.2% in 2021
FTSE 100 – Up 13.9% in 2021.
Euro Storxx 50 – Up 21.0% in 2021
Colombian MSCI Colcap – Down 1.9% in 2021.
Why I ask? Colombian corporate profitability and dividend yields seem to be competitive.

All in all, the notion expats should invest in Colombia is very unwise, especially if your performance basis is a currency other than the Colombia peso. Let’s not forget inflation is generally much higher in Colombia than in where expats come from.

Of course, financial comfort is but one measuring tool – Colombia has many other attractions – just look at the virus statistics for example.
