For those looking for a competent, bilingual lawyer in Bogota

Hi All,

I was surprised not to receive one recommendation for a bilingual, competent lawyer in Bogota for a real estate transaction on this forum. Fortunately, I was able to locate a few recommendations from other source sand I wanted to forward this information here in case anyone in the future finds themselves in need of one. Obviously, if you speak fluent Spanish and live in Bogota, this won't apply to you and without a doubt, you'll be able to find more cost-effective options.

The following three lawyers were recommended to me. I have listed my experiences with each of them and highly recommend the last lawyer listed, as he did a great job.

1. Firm of Jaime Catano- ([email protected]). Communication with this firm was choppy and inconsistent at best and they tried to push their real estate services on me (even though I clearly articulated I was only looking for a lawyer). So they passed me around to a junior lawyer and then to their Executive Manager (who wasn't even a lawyer) and quoted me a price of 2750 Euros (why they quoted me a price in Euros I'll never know). I quickly eliminated them from consideration. They were unprofessional from the start.

2. Christoph Möller ([email protected])- I used Christoph in the past and he certainly does good work and speaks fluent English. However, his fees have increased dramatically over the years (I would conservatively estimate they have doubled and they were already high 5 years ago when I last used him). He wanted a straight 3% of the sales price of my apt. to handle my sale paperwork which is preposterous, in my opinion. Business must be good for Christophe to charge those fees, so more power to him. I quite like him but I just couldn't justify that fee. His fee would have been about USD $6000 in my case, so I quickly crossed him off my list.

3. Luis Carlos Jaramillo ([email protected]). Luis Carlos speaks decent English and his communication in general was on-point and efficient. He quoted me a price of USD $2750 to do all the paperwork, act as my power of attorney (I was out of the country for the whole process), and ensure all the financial details (after finding a buyer). I preferred to be paid via a USD to USD transfer (with down payment in pesos) and he arranged all of it competently. He was all a very good trouble-shooter when issues would come up (and they always do). I did feel his fee was on the expensive side, at first, but in the end, his services were well worth it. Luis Carlos did a great job and I would highly recommend him for anyone who wants an honest, bilingual lawyer in Bogota.
