Take care, credit card fraud

We had a first time ever last week. Late afternoon, we started getting confirmation from our local bank of a number of MasterCard card transactions earlier that day.. Problem was, we did not make them. It was quite a pile as 5 transactions had already gone through before we realized what was happening and notified the bank who immediately canceled our credit card. By then, 7 million had already been charged to our account.

How did it happen – that was clear; we normally make all internet payments via PSE, but changed this habit for a few days to online payment by credit card to rack up a few miles and several of these online credit card transactions required details from our card.

Lesson: Make your online payments in Colombia via PSE.

Must admit, our bank handled this well and quickly. Only problem is, the 7 million charged to our credit card must be paid by the monthly deadline for card repayments and will only be recovered from MasterCard when they have concluded their investigations confirming we were not at fault.

Our bank confirmed they were being flooded with similar cases, the clerk we were dealing with having had a similar problem only days earlier. Informed some friends and family and got similar feedback.
