Medellín jitters

Been reading the thread "Mugged in Medellin ". I'm not really a Nervous Nellie, but the number of posts I've seen about muggings and robberies makes me wonder if there's cause for concern.
I'm going to MDE next week for a few days to see an old college friend who's vacationing in Colombia. Staying in Poblado. Even my husband is saying to be verrrry careful. I mean, I understand about being aware of your surroundings, don't flash your cellphone, etc.
There's a shop I want to go to in Poblado that's about a 20 or so minute walk from my hotel and my husband said I should take a taxi. Is it really that bad?
I don't plan to use ATMs; just a credit card or my bank card. I'll have a bit of cash on hand por si acaso.
Probably will use taxis for longer hikes, but what about just walking around Poblado? I'm told that Parque Lleras is a bit dodgy at night, but I don't plan on going out at night. I thought about checking out a milonga at one of the tango places, but I don't want to leave my stuff alone at a table while I'm dancing. And I get enough tango in Manizales, so there's that.
