Travel Story. Oh Oh.

Several years ago my adult son came down to visit me. He's made a number of trips. and I always find something new for us to do. Having already been to many places around Colombia this time I chose something local, a visit to Naranjal on the Valle Del Cauca, Chocó border. I'd been there with a European friend, resident in Colombia back in 2002. There was a minor incident with the FARC then but that's another story. This time we traveled with my European friend, my son and his twelve year old son to Naranjal with the goal of spending the night then traveling down the same dead end dirt road out of town we'd been on 22 years ago. There would be many special orchids to be seen and photographed. .We arrived mid afternoon so killed time at a river that runs by the edge of the town. We noted two Indian guys near my car who watched us the whole time. Later that afternoon my son and I were in a panaderia having a beer while my friend was off somewhere when two police came by on their moto. Surprised to see two gringos in that remote place they asked what the hell were we doing there. I told them our plan for the next day and they got on the radio for a bit. Then they came back and said look, there are twenty-five very dangerous ELN fifteen minutes down that road...and they know you're here! If you go down that road there's nothing we can do as there's twenty five of them and only eleven of us. Needless to say we spent the night and went home the next day without going down that road. I took my son to Silvia .Cauca instead.
