I have yet to see a toilet in Colombia that is bolted to a flange below it. I have only seen one toilet replaced and it had no flange or wax ring. It was being replaced because it leaked. The plumber said that using a flange causes the toilet to leak. Mine back home have been leak free for at least 30 years, they are bolted down and the only one I have replaced was bolted to the flange as recommended. They do sell flanges in HomeCenter in Manizales. What they do instead of using a flange and wax ring is put quite a bit of some goo around the pipe and the edge of the toilet and glue it to the floor. I think this works because all the toilets I have seen are installed on concrete or tile over concrete. I’m wondering if there are any toilets in Colombia that are installed with a flange. Has anyone seen a toilet with two bolts holding it down?

If anyone is planning to replace a toilet I’d suggest installing the new one as the old one was installed. There might be a good reason not to use a flange and wax ring. The drain pipes I have seen in use are much thinner than anything I have in my house back home. It could be that the thin pipes lack the strength necessary to support the use of a flange.
