Amazon and Privacy.

I will try to pick my words carefully as I would hate to get into a fight with one of today’s economic monsters but what I am presently experiencing is factual and I would appreciate members’ comments and views.

I use Amazon quite a bit and our decision to defer indefinitely our departure from Colombia has led to a flurry of activity that argued we should try “upgrading” to Prime. We chose the 30 day trial period to start with but allowed it to expire without renewal when we reasoned our continued use would be much more modest.

Ok, over and done with we thought…..but NO, we have experienced some events that lead us to wonder if relationship changes with Amazon do not happen without consequences?

We have experienced scamming/phishing on our computer for a long time but at a level I have understood to be “normal”. However, within days of the expiry of our Prime status, this level of phishing has increased exponentially. At the moment, I would say we receive about 60, or 70 per day, whereas it was about a dozen previously. Of course, this increase in attempts could have been occasioned by other factors, but closer examination clearly indicates a direct link with the purchase enquiries we were making in Amazon. If we examined Japanese carving knives, which we did, we inevitably found “offers” in our inbox within 24 hours congratulating us on our “free loyalty gift”, just tick this acceptance box…..etc.etc.

Is it possible our Amazon search activity has become available to a “market” as a consequence of our renouncing an Amazon benefit?
