Event: Crime and Terrorism in Colombia

The U.S. Embassy reminds U.S. citizens of the presence of terrorist and transnational criminal organizations in certain regions of Colombia. Although some of these groups have established bilateral ceasefires with the Colombian government, the ceasefire with a designated terrorist organization was suspended in southwestern Colombia on March 20, 2024. In response, the Colombian government has deployed additional security personnel to the Departments of Cauca, Valle de Cauca, and Nariño. The cease fire suspension may lead to an increased risk of terrorism directed at Colombian security forces.

U.S. citizens should be alert to the possibility that extremists may conduct attacks at any place and at any time with little or no warning. U.S. Citizens should also be vigilant, maintain heightened situational awareness, and incorporate strong personal security practices into their daily activities.

The U.S. Department of State has a level three travel advisory for Colombia and recommends that U.S. citizens reconsider travel due to?crime?and?terrorism and exercise increased caution due to?civil unrest?and?kidnapping.
