Bank Colombia, EUR & COP where did I go wrong?

In another thread we discussed the compatibility of Visa, Mastercard and online shops in Colombia. I have now signed an account with Bancolombia. Two other banks refused because I have a V visa (Visitante Rentista).

My plan was as follows: I would transfer part of my pension using Paypal to the account at Bank Colombia and then have pesos. I use this to pay current bills, internet shops and purchases in local supermarkets. Today I deposited 600,000 pesos cash in a sucursale so that I could use it quickly. The amount was converted into EUR and credited. Why? I brought pesos in cash. I paid with my new card in a hardware store and was asked if I was paying in EUR...

how come? what went wrong? I don't have any statements yet, but I have the feeling that I'll pay exchange fees and bank charges x times this way - here in Colombia and in Austria likewise.

where did I go wrong? I assumed that a Colombian account would automatically be an account in the local currency, please advise, thanks to everyone in the know
