The ramblings of a hopeful expat…
Having recently decided this is the route for me to take, I have begun my research. Keep in mind, my retirement is only 5 to 7 years in the future and I am an intense planner. I have checked websites for travel opportunities, relocation advice and just general information specific to the countries I am considering.
A little about me so that you understand my thought processes…I have traveled to Europe numerous times, lived in Spain for a year and a half and am bilingual – learned through institutions of higher learning and life experience. I am enamored of the culture, lifestyle and kindness of all Spanish speaking people I have met in my life. While I am not considering Spain in my possibilities at this time, the country holds a special place in my heart. I fear it may be too far and the cost of traveling back and forth too high. With that having been said, I am considering two Latin American countries at present time and focusing my energies on them…Costa Rica and Panama.
Having grown up and living now within 20 minutes of the beach, the coastal life is not what I am seeking. Oh, yes, I do intend to visit from time to time however, sand everywhere and high humidity is not what I am seeking. I would prefer to reside in a location fairly close to a major city – I am type 2 diabetic, but not too close. I have viewed many rental properties on craigslist.com in valley areas and I feel this would best suit me. I would prefer to not have to deal with AC and heating. Open windows and doors are what I seek.
I plan to invest in travel to each of the countries to verify which might be best for me; however, I think this decision can be made through research and no travel. I do know that once the country is decided upon, location within that country will require travel research – which I look forward to with great anticipation.
With all of this having been said, my concerns begin…
Healthcare - can my needs be met through CAJA
Medical care for type 2 diabetic non insulin dependent but on meds
Safety and security for a single woman of retirement age
Information on locations within each country keeping in mind my requirements
Banking…is it best to maintain the account in the states for the purpose of retirement income and simply utilize ATMs, etc? This must be kept in mind when choosing location as well.
I appreciate any and all information anyone would like to provide. I am very new to this decision. I feel that this is the best way to start, with my primary concerns and the other concerns will follow.
