The Minister of Tourism, William Rodriguez, confirmed this Friday that the provisions of the Digital Nomad Law are complete and will be signed next week.

The approved legislation will permit "Digital Nomads" to be attracted to Costa Rica, workers with flexible labor conditions that can work remotely.

Among the measures planned in the law are the extension of the visit period to one year and the possibility to extend for another year, which is longer than a tourist visa which, depending on the country of origin, is up to 90 days.

The law was approved in July of 2021 and the regulation should have been ready by November of 2021. However, this was not the case, which means that the Digital Nomad visa was not released, despite the tendency in the last few years to work for whatever Costa Rica wanted to approve.

In order to request a visa (when it becomes available), the digital shepherds must comply with the following criteria: $3,000 per month ($4,000 with family), have a "stable" remote work income, and proof of medical insurance that covers the validity period of the visa.

These visas are technically more permissive than residency that allow digital nomads to live and work in the country without worrying about exceeding their tourist visas. However, the work must be done for a foreign business, running a business or working autonomously with foreign clients.

Among other things, the Ministry of Tourism revealed its opposition to the extension of the moratorium on the full payment of the IVA of 13% for businesses in the tourist sector.

In regards to the call to strengthen tourist security, Rodriguez said that the country needs to improve the security of its citizens in general and not only in the areas frequented by foreigners.
