Moving from USA to Guatemala

This is what I am looking for: Move from the USA to Guatemala. I want to become a permanent resident there, but i also want to be able to travel back and forth from Guatemala to the USA to visit my parents here. I have heard you can only get a permanent residency in Guatemala if you retire there or own a business, is this true? thanks in advance for any advice. also my email is if you would like to reach me that way. Any info on jobs, cost of living/insurance, would also be appreciated. Area I'm looking at is Guatemala City. but info about any other cities would be fine too. looking for a safe place to raise a family. Thanks to all.

In order for you to apply for residency you need to prove that you can either sustain yourself through a pension from retirement either welfare or rents. Either that you invest at least $50k in guatemala through a business. And the last option is to be employed here with a legal permit to work by a local company.
Now I would say if you want to raise a family in a safe environment I'm not sure Guatemala City is any less dangerous than the States, maybe you want to consider looking at the town of Antigua and Quetzaltenango. Cost of living... well low outside Guatemala City , Insurance plenty of private medical insurance nationals or foreign to choose from.

I have read that foreigners can get work permits by application and paying a fee (approx. $300 US). Is this not the case?
