House rental close to Guate? What would you do?

Hi all,
This is my first post and wanted to start by saying I'm delighted to find this forum and a big thanks to all who have posted already. I've found some very helpful info here so far but hoping to get some up-to-date info if possible.
We are a Canadian-Guatemalan family looking to temporarily move to Guatemala in fall 2013 for about a year. My spouse was born and raised in Peten and doesn't know a lot about Guatemala city. We need to be within commuting distance to Guatemala city for 4-6months (after that we'll be in Peten) and we're looking for suggestions on where to rent a house.
Our girls will be 3.5 yrs old and only 6 months old (due soon!) when we move. We have travelled extensively all over Guatemala but have only ever lived in the Peten. We've spent some time in the city, but never more than a week or so at a time.
I will be doing research for my phd dissertation which will require me to be in city most weekdays. We were thinking we might rent in Antigua or Ciudad Vieja and I would commute. This forum has also introduced the idea of San Lucas Sacatepeque, a place that we have never been. I would prefer to be as close to Guate as possible while maintaining a laid-back lifestyle for our young girls. And low crime / safety is very important for us. We'd love to find a place with lots of opportunities to go for walks, play in parks, child-friendly outings, maybe close to daycare or preschool too...
What would you do?
What do you think our rental budget should be?
We're planning on bringing or buying a car so we'll need parking too.
Thanks in advance to those who are able to offer input.
