I’m running in circles, cause I heard it all has to be stamped st a Guatemalan consulate here in the us but I’m nowhere close to one and i can’t get ahold of any offices! Just call centers and they’re not very helpful! If I mail all my documents in to be stamped how long will it take or how do I even go about doing it?? Any help is appreciated!!!!

My wife and I have lived in Guatemala for 7 years and I got permanent residency.

One thing you need to be aware of is you don't need to be a resident to spend as much time as you want in Guatemala on a regular visitors visa. You can either go to Mexico for 1 day every 6 months or pay a fine of about $1..50 a day if you over stay the 6 months that a visitors visa allows. Over staying the 6 months on a visitors visa does not restrict you from returning to Guatemala whatsoever, The only penality is the approx, $1.50 a day fine. So if you don't need residency for

If you want to work in Guatemala, without being a resident is you need to get a "NIT#" which I don't think is difficult for a non resident and your employer will take 10% out of your pay check. The 10% taken out of your pay check is slightly higher than if you were a citizen or resident. The employer is responsible to collect taxes for an employee that is not a resident or citizen and the employer may not care if you have a NIT# or not.

When I got my residency I used a Guatemalan Immigration lawyer. His name is Juan Garcia (). I know him to be honest, he speaks excellent english, and has a lot of contacts that allow you to "jump the line", etc making the process easier and proceed faster. He costs more than the average immigration lawyer(for me it was approx. $1500), but I think he is worth it.

For sure you at least will have to come to Guatemala a couple of times during the process. You need to ask Juan or your immigration lawyer what the rules are about you needing to be present in Guatemala during the process.
