UK 4 yr perm residency req

I have worked in the UK for 3 and 1/2 years on a four year work permit. Upon completion of 4 years, my company would normally apply for me (and my family) to become permanent residents (or right to indefinite leave I think it may be called) . Perm res status means we can work here without a work permit.

My company is asking me to repatriate to the US this summer. Thus I have two questions -

1) if my spouse and teenage child stay here until year end, can they qualify for perm res status (with my working in the US)? (I presume they cannot work during this time, which is not the issue).

2) I had understood that should I change employers within my four years, I'd need new working papers and my four year countdown to permanent residency would have to start all over again. Is this correct?

My intention is to get perm res status so that our child can have the option to work in the UK should she wish to later on.

I've checked the foreign office website but have found nothing on perm res status.

Thanks for any help!
