What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Lucca?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Lucca about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the Italian healthcare system. Italy has a high standard of healthcare and pregnant women are well cared for. However, the system can be complex and bureaucratic, so it's worth doing your research and understanding your rights and entitlements. Secondly, consider hiring a doula or midwife who speaks both English and Italian. This can be a great help in navigating the healthcare system, understanding medical terminology, and advocating for your wishes during labor and delivery. Thirdly, ensure you have all necessary documents in order. This includes your residence permit, health insurance details, and any other paperwork required by the hospital. It's also a good idea to have these documents translated into Italian. Fourthly, take advantage of prenatal classes. Many hospitals in Italy offer these classes, which can be a great way to prepare for childbirth and meet other expectant parents. Fifthly, be aware that Italian hospitals tend to have strict visiting hours and policies. Make sure your family and friends are aware of these rules to avoid any misunderstandings or disappointments. Lastly, after the baby is born, you will need to register the birth with the local town hall (Comune) within ten days. This is a legal requirement in Italy and failure to do so can result in a fine. It's also necessary for obtaining a passport for your baby if you plan to travel. Remember, living in a foreign country can be challenging, but it can also be a wonderful adventure. Take the time to enjoy this special time in your life and embrace the Italian way of life," commented one expat who made the move to Lucca, Italy.
