What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Kyoto?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Kyoto about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the Japanese healthcare system. Japan has a universal healthcare system, so you will need to register for health insurance. This will cover a large portion of your medical costs, including prenatal care and childbirth. Secondly, you should find a hospital or clinic that suits your needs. Some hospitals in Kyoto have English-speaking staff and offer services tailored to foreigners. It's recommended to visit a few hospitals and clinics to find one where you feel comfortable. Thirdly, consider hiring a doula or midwife who can provide support and guidance throughout your pregnancy and childbirth. They can also help bridge any language or cultural gaps. Fourthly, take advantage of the various prenatal classes and support groups available in Kyoto. These can be a great way to meet other expectant parents and learn more about the birthing process in Japan. Fifthly, understand the cultural differences. In Japan, it's common for mothers to stay in the hospital for a few days after giving birth, and there are certain customs and traditions associated with childbirth that may be different from your home country. Lastly, make sure to register your baby's birth with your home country's embassy or consulate to ensure they receive citizenship. Also, remember to register the birth with the local city office in Kyoto to receive a birth certificate and other necessary documents," remarked another expat in Kyoto, Japan.
