What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Kamakura?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Kamakura about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the Japanese healthcare system. Japan has a universal healthcare system, so you will need to register for health insurance. Prenatal care and childbirth are covered by insurance, but there may be some out-of-pocket costs. Secondly, consider hiring a doula or midwife who speaks your native language. This can be a great help in navigating the healthcare system and ensuring you understand everything that's happening during your pregnancy and birth. Thirdly, start looking for a hospital or birthing center early in your pregnancy. Some facilities may not accept foreign patients, or may have limited space. Make sure to find a place where you feel comfortable and where the staff can communicate with you in a language you understand. Fourthly, take advantage of local resources. There are many support groups and classes for expectant parents in Kamakura, and these can be a great way to meet other expats who are going through the same experience. Fifthly, be prepared for cultural differences. Japanese attitudes towards pregnancy and childbirth may be different from what you're used to. For example, it's common for Japanese women to return to their parents' home to give birth, and there may be certain customs or traditions that are unfamiliar to you. Lastly, make sure to take care of your mental health. Being pregnant and giving birth in a foreign country can be stressful, so it's important to have a support system in place and to seek help if you're feeling overwhelmed," remarked another expat who made the move to Kamakura, Japan.
