As a foreigner living in Antwerp, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?

Answer this Question

We asked expats in Antwerp if they have access to public healthcare in Antwerp. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...

"As a foreigner living in Antwerp, you will have access to public healthcare, provided you have registered with the local authorities and have valid health insurance. The Belgian healthcare system is known for its high-quality care, with well-equipped hospitals and highly trained medical professionals. Public healthcare in Belgium is funded through a combination of social security contributions and taxes, which ensures that medical services are accessible and affordable for residents. You will need to choose a primary care physician, known as a huisarts in Dutch, who will be your first point of contact for any medical concerns. They can refer you to specialists if necessary. It is important to note that while public healthcare is generally affordable, you may still be required to pay a portion of the costs for certain treatments or consultations," wrote a member who made the move to Antwerp, Belgium.
