New amateur radio regulations in Costa Rica

View/Add Comments (0 Comments) |

For several years, Costa Rica was without any meaningful amateur radio regulations as they abolished the previous agency responsible for those and turned it over to a new telecommunications agency, SUTEL. SUTEL took their sweet time about implementing new regs, but finally this year came out with a new manual for amateur radio operators, licensing fees and various forms. Foreigners from countries with reciprocal operating agreements can apply to operate in TI-Land by using the following form (it opens a Word document): http://tinyurl.com/costaricahamradioforms You are supposed to present it in person along with a copy of your passport and current radio license and a list of the radio equipment you will be using. You must sign with a TI prefix that corresponds to the province from which you are operating. You do not need to pass a test or obtain residency to operate from Costa Rica. http://tinyurl.com/costaricahamradioforms

I'm on my third career in life that of being voluntarily unemployed! The first two were house construction and later hi-tech as a software engineer. I was fortunate to be able to retire early in Costa Rica back in '07. With my wife and younger son we bought land and built a dream house with that million-dollar view you hear so much about. We spend time raising coffee, bananas, and fruit trees. My wife is an accomplished artist and has discovered new media to express herself here including beautiful ceramic mosaics. Pura vida! P.S. Now, in 2021, planning our next move ... to México!
