Expat Advice: Relationships in Florence, Italy
What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?
Florence
What is your current status? Are you single, dating, in a long-term relationship, married or divorced?
Married with Children.
What is it like in your country of residence for someone with your relationship status (married/divorced/dating)? If you're single, how do you meet other people? Do English-speaking people tend to gravitate to certain parts of your city?
Easy. The citizens of the United States travel here a lot and spend money, so they are appreciated. To be married with children here carries no different weight than it would in any other modern culture. Yes.
If you have children, what advice would you give to others making a similar transition to your country of residence?
To make every effort to learn the language and teach your children the language as quickly as possible.
What would be the best advice you could give someone with your relationship status that lives in your country of residence? Any other thoughts?
We would suggest to begin your stay here with a positive attitude towards the massive, inefficient and lethargic Italian bureaucracy. It's only a small part of the life experience here. The benefits of the rich Italian history, the incredible food, the stupendous beauty of the terrain and the diversity of the Italian culture vastly outweigh the negative aspects of the mind-numbing difficulty involved in getting anything done here. Your ability to accept the bad aspects and relish the positive ones can be the difference between assignment failure and a life in paradise. LEARN THE LANGUAGE!
