Should have left at home: 1. Heavy clothes that weighed too much on the flight 2. The last five year's business records 3. Any clothes not made of cotton

What advice would you give someone preparing to move to your area about the actual move, choosing a neighborhood and finding a home?

My advice would be to list your priorities of what you are really looking for in order of importance to you. Determine what would be a deal breaker and make the realtor aware of this information. Keep looking and don't stop until you find what you want because it is here in Playa! My 1st trip, I looked for 2 days. A month later when I returned, I found my dream home and signed a year's lease within 24 hours. I am very happy!

What type of housing do you live in? Is this typical for most expats in your area?

I am in a 2 bedroom/1 bath apartment. it's perfect for me as a single retiree in a quiet neighborhood. This is typical for those willing to pay a little bit more for a tranquil community.

How did you choose your neighborhood and find your home or apartment?

I hired a taxi/guide/realtor service to show me around the various neighborhoods. I was given the history and current makeup of the communities. I was able to determine which were popular for families, pets and parties. I kept hunting until I found the perfect place for me.

Are your housing costs higher or lower than they were in your home country? What is the average cost of housing there?

The housing costs [in Playa del Carmen] are definitely lower than in my home country. I am 3 blocks from the beach and I would be paying 3 times as much in my home country. The average cost where I am is about $1,000.00 USD per month. for a furnished 2 bedroom apartment with utilities included. I pay a little less because the furniture is antique...which some call old.
