Expat Advice: Culture Shock in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia

Submitted by ResearchTeam

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

Dhahran

What are the most challenging aspects of the new culture?

One of the most challenging aspects of the local culture for expats in Dhahran is the strict adherence to Islamic law and customs. This includes the requirement to dress modestly, the prohibition of alcohol, and the segregation of men and women in public spaces. Additionally, the lack of freedom of speech and expression can be difficult for expats to adjust to, as well as the lack of access to certain forms of entertainment. Furthermore, the language barrier can be a challenge for expats, as Arabic is the official language of the country.
