City Profile: Chuncheon, Korea
Summary: Life in Chuncheon, Korea is a lot different that Seoul. With over 250,000 residents, only a 1000 or so are expats.
How long have you lived there?
Over a year
What activities, clubs and organizations would you recommend to newcomers to help them meet others?
There is a small foreign population here. The most common foreigners seem to be Foreign English Teachers, who work at English institutes, called Hagwons. There are modern supermarkets, but there is limited access to international foods. Of course, the city has McDonalds, KFC, Pizza Hut, Outback Steakhouse, and some other international bakeries and restaurants. Seoul is an hour and a half by express bus or two hours by train.
In general, what are peoples' priorities in this city? For example, do lives revolve around work, family, socializing, sports, etc.?
This seems to be a university town and "bedroom" community. There are a few nice parks and an underground shopping center in the Myeon Dong district.
In terms of religious, racial, economic and cultural diversity, are the people of this city or town diverse? Are they accepting of differences? Describe.
Again, there are limited number of foreigners. I have heard unofficial numbers of a little over a thousand out of a population of over 250,000. There are temples and churches of various faiths here and a SDA English Institute with church services in Korean and English (Saturdays).
What are the main industries in this city? What types of career opportunities commonly exist? How do most people find new jobs?
There are a number of universities and private schools. As a foreigner, your best opportunity would be to work for a Hagwon or a university as an English Teacher.
If a friend of yours was thinking of moving to this city or town from far away, what other advice would you give them.
There is a bit of a culture shock. A good place to find other foreigners are the supermarkets or major stores. Pick up a Korean/English dictionary also.
