buying a car or boat in Belize

Hello all, I am hoping to move to Belize soon and rent until I find an area that i like/like's me. I was wondering if thee are car lots, or websites that people sell there car at? or do you just have to ask around and keep an eye out for a "for sale" sign? Oh, and what hoops would i have to jump though to legally drive in Belize? Don't think my US driver license will do the trick.
I also hope to buy a boat that would be Ocean worthy, nothing too big, Just a safe fishing boat, a small, (used) Whaler would be nice if i could get it at a reasonable price.
speaking of price...are cars and boats less expensive, more expensive, or about the same in Belize?...thinking it depends on location, like here in the US.
Thanks for any input!

Small is not ocean-worthy you really don't want anything smaller than 20 feet.

Theres roughly 40 to 70% import tax on vehicles depending on engine size and type so vehicles are very pricey so are boats, everything imported has import taxes on it.

yes, i agree, 20' is probably about as safest size i would feel comfortable in with a newer motor, also out far.

I've see pictures of Belizian's wooden boats, or skiffs, that do not seem very large, maybe 12'-14' seem to be doing ok with catching sip jack, snapper, etc. not sure how far out the are going, but they grew up there and know the safest areas.

Thanks!

Yes, that will make the price double no doubt. Bought the book Easy Belize(revised second edition), just got to the page that explains the import duties.
Read MOON's living abroad a while back(need to re-read it), I remember something about if entering the county with retired status(don't recall exactly what it called), you can being up to 25,000? worth of goods in, with out being hit with the 25-80% duties.
probably need a good broker to get your own car or truck in with out being slammed. wonder how they come up with the value of the item being taxed.?
thanks for your reply Bob

The motor thing is another issue. Going out far means you need to plan for a motor failure. You do want 2 motors, either 2 primaries or a primary with an emergency back up.

There are used car lots and new car dealerships that have usedcars from trade-ins and rentals.
On the street, cars will have a sign in the window with dollar signs and the phone number indicating it's for sale.

Facebook: "Belize Boat Trader", "Belize Expats Buy sell Trade", "Placencia Classifieds!" groups.

Check Captain Shark's web site, although it does not really have good selection.

I am looking for a skiff as well, but cannot really find anything decent.

Vehicles: Plenty for sale, but 85% of all Belize vehicles are in rough shape, least by US standards. Plus duties make importing nice ones cost prohibitive. Kinley 25-30k bzd for what you'd feel comfortable in. Boats: 8-15k bzd should suffic for something again "trustworthy". If interested in a vehicle pm me, I've a good condition 4x4 suv duties paid, Belize and USA clean titled for sale. All paperwork and receipts. A great reliable rig, I don't have a need for anymore. Best of luck on your endeavors.

Yep we bought a vehicle form an expat who was giving us a "Great"deal, looked nice but within 3 months the chassis totally collapsed. it was a Katrina write off (yes the expat did know that we later found) and they are written off for good reason. They won't last., even if not in a subtropical country.
Buying any vehicle in the near future in Belize you need to really know its History for the last couple of years. No one wants an insurrance write off that went through a flood.
Cheap good vehicle in Belize are sold in the car lot by the unicorn farm.

bought a Nissan X-terra off the side of the road in Corozol. It belonged to a Belizean girl from Belize City. It is still in pretty good shape for an early 2,000 model...It cost me 5K US,,,,,
