Job, schools, etc in Guildford

My wife, kids and I are planning to move from sunny Southern California to London area around Autumn of 2007. We're all US citizens. Our move is self-motivated and therefore cannot count on a company relocation - no we're not independently wealthy either.

I'm interested to know what the market is like for getting a well-paying job (Project Manager, etc.) in the IT field. My wife is a lawyer in LA, but also has an extensive background in Education research (she currently consults with schools in the LA area) and is also looking to work there if possible.

I believe a 2 year work permit is pretty easy to get, but what's the catch and do UK companies even consider outsiders? Do they care to sponsor someone that may be marginally better than the local candidates? Or is the market so good that they're open to taking international candidates?

My wife and I are looking at Guildford for now, as the state schools seem to be quite decent there. How is Guildford as a place to live/work/learn? We're not too keen on the sub-urban experience but with 2 boys (6 and 8 now) maybe that's the only option for us.
How are the schools? Is private/parochial schooling necessary to get a decent education?
Any advice on any/all of the matters above would be much appreciated.

Thanks.
