What is it like to retire in Margate?

"Life for a retiree in Margate, can be quite pleasant and fulfilling. The town is known for its beautiful sandy beaches and charming old town, offering a peaceful and relaxed lifestyle. There is a thriving arts scene, with the Turner Contemporary gallery being a major cultural attraction. The gallery showcases contemporary and historical art, often featuring works by JMW Turner, who was inspired by the Margate landscape. In terms of recreation, there are plenty of opportunities for walking and cycling along the coast. The Viking Coastal Trail is a popular route, offering stunning views of the sea. For those interested in gardening or nature, the Draper's Windmill and the Walpole Bay Hotel and Museum are must-visit spots. While Margate may not have a bustling nightlife like larger cities, it does have a selection of cosy pubs and restaurants. The town also has a theatre, the Theatre Royal, which is the second oldest theatre in the country. It offers a variety of performances, from plays to concerts and comedy shows. As for the expat community, Margate is more of a traditional British seaside town, so it may not have a large expat community compared to cities like London or Manchester. However, its proximity to London makes it easy to connect with larger expat communities. The town itself is quite diverse and welcoming, so retirees from different backgrounds should feel at home. In conclusion, Margate offers a peaceful seaside lifestyle with a touch of arts and culture, making it an attractive place for retirees," said a person in Margate.
