Is the cost of living in Sapporo high?

We asked people how much they someone comfortably live on in Sapporo, they wrote:

"The cost of living in Sapporo, is considered moderate compared to other major cities in Japan like Tokyo or Osaka. Rent for a one-bedroom apartment in the city center can be quite affordable, while those located outside of the city center are even cheaper. The cost of utilities such as electricity, heating, cooling, and water are also relatively reasonable. When it comes to groceries, prices can vary. Local produce, seafood, and other items are generally affordable, but imported goods can be more expensive. Eating out in Sapporo can range from inexpensive at local ramen shops to more costly at high-end sushi restaurants. Public transportation in Sapporo is efficient and reasonably priced, with options including subways, buses, and taxis. Owning a car can be more expensive due to costs like fuel, maintenance, and parking. Healthcare in Sapporo, as in the rest of Japan, is of high quality. Residents are required to enroll in a public health insurance system, which covers a large portion of medical expenses. Overall, while the cost of living in Sapporo is not the cheapest in Japan, it is more affordable than in cities like Tokyo or Osaka. The city offers a good balance between urban conveniences and access to nature, making it a desirable place to live," explained one expat.

Will I save money living in Sapporo?

"The cost of living in Sapporo can be lower than in many cities in the United States, especially when compared to major metropolitan areas like New York City or San Francisco. Housing and rent prices in Sapporo are generally more affordable than in many U.S. cities. Eating out in Sapporo can be cheaper as well, with a wide range of affordable dining options. Public transportation in Sapporo is also efficient and reasonably priced, which could save you money compared to owning and maintaining a car in the U.S. However, some goods and services, such as imported products, can be more expensive in Japan. Health insurance is mandatory in Japan and may be more or less expensive than in the U.S. depending on your income and health condition. Therefore, whether or not you save money by living in Sapporo would depend on your lifestyle and spending habits," remarked one expat in Sapporo.

What is the average cost of housing in Sapporo?

If you are thinking about moving to Sapporo, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:

"The average cost of housing in Sapporo can vary greatly depending on the location and size of the property. For a single-bedroom apartment in the city center, the monthly rent is typically around 50,000 to 80,000 Japanese Yen. If you're looking outside of the city center, the rent for a similar apartment can drop to around 30,000 to 50,000 Yen. If you're interested in buying property, the average price per square meter in the city center is approximately 500,000 Yen, while outside of the city center it's around 300,000 Yen. However, these prices can fluctuate based on the current real estate market," remarked one expat in Sapporo.
