What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Umm Al Quwain?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Umm Al Quwain about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to understand the healthcare system in Umm Al Quwain. The healthcare facilities are generally of a high standard, but it's crucial to have comprehensive health insurance to cover all medical costs. Secondly, you should find a good obstetrician or gynecologist. You can ask for recommendations from other expats or do your own research online. Thirdly, familiarize yourself with the local customs and laws regarding childbirth. In the UAE, it's illegal for unmarried couples to have a baby, so ensure you're legally married to avoid any complications. Fourthly, prepare for the paperwork. Births must be registered within 30 days at the local health department. You'll need to bring your passports, marriage certificate, and the discharge summary from the hospital. Fifthly, consider the language barrier. While English is widely spoken in the UAE, it may not be the first language for many healthcare professionals. You might want to hire a translator or find a doctor who speaks your language. Lastly, plan for postnatal care. This can include finding a pediatrician for your baby, arranging vaccinations, and considering whether you'll need help at home in the early weeks. Remember, having a baby in a foreign country can be a challenging experience, but with the right preparation and support, it can also be a very rewarding one," remarked another expat who made the move to Umm Al Quwain, the UAE.
