What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Mechelen?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Mechelen about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to understand that healthcare in Belgium is of a high standard, so you can expect good prenatal and postnatal care. You should register with a local doctor or midwife as soon as you know you're pregnant. Belgium has a mandatory health insurance system, so make sure you're covered. If you're working in Belgium, your employer should have you covered. If not, you'll need to arrange this yourself. You should also familiarize yourself with the maternity leave policies in Belgium. Mothers are entitled to 15 weeks of maternity leave, and fathers are entitled to 10 days. Belgium has a system of 'kraamzorg' or postnatal care, where a professional will visit your home to help with the baby and give advice. This can be very helpful for first-time parents. You'll also need to register the birth of your baby at the local town hall within 15 days. If you're not a Belgian citizen, you'll also need to register the birth with your home country's embassy or consulate. Belgium has a strong tradition of vaccinations, and your baby will need to be vaccinated against a number of diseases. Make sure you're aware of the schedule and that your baby is up to date. Finally, take advantage of the many parent and baby groups in Mechelen. These can be a great way to meet other parents, share experiences, and get advice," remarked another expat who made the move to Mechelen, Belgium.
