What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Nara?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Nara about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the Japanese healthcare system. Japan has a universal healthcare system, so you will need to register for health insurance. Prenatal care and childbirth are covered by insurance, but there may be some out-of-pocket costs. Secondly, find a hospital or clinic that suits your needs. Some hospitals in Japan may not offer epidurals or other pain relief options during labor, so if this is important to you, make sure to find a hospital that does. Also, some hospitals may have English-speaking staff, which could be helpful if you're not fluent in Japanese. Thirdly, consider hiring a doula or birth coach. They can provide emotional support and help you navigate the healthcare system. They can also help with language barriers if they speak both English and Japanese. Fourthly, be aware of cultural differences. In Japan, it's common for women to stay in the hospital for a few days after giving birth, and there may be certain customs or traditions that are different from what you're used to. Fifthly, make sure to register your baby's birth with your home country's embassy or consulate. This will ensure that your baby has citizenship in your home country. Lastly, take advantage of local resources. There may be parenting classes or support groups for expats in Nara. These can be a great way to meet other parents and get advice on raising a baby in Japan," remarked another expat who made the move to Nara, Japan.
