What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Ha Long Bay?

Answer this Question

We asked people in Ha Long Bay if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!...

"When visiting Ha Long Bay in Vietnam, it's important to respect the local customs and traditions. Avoid wearing revealing clothing, especially when visiting religious sites, as it is considered disrespectful. Public displays of affection are not common in Vietnamese culture, so try to limit these. It's also considered rude to point with your finger, instead use your whole hand to gesture. When visiting someone's home, always remove your shoes before entering. Bargaining is common in Vietnam, but do so respectfully and without aggression. Avoid discussing sensitive topics such as politics and the Vietnam War. Lastly, remember to ask for permission before taking photos of locals, as some may find it intrusive," explained one expat living in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam.
