what to do about neighbours cutting trees without permission

I need some advice. We got back to panama after being gone for 6 months. Our next door neighbours are middle- class Panamanian. She speaks English , he does not. I gave her a key to my house to check it for me, and change my damp rid containers. All was fine that way and I am grateful. However I really love my plants and trees. my disappointment is, her husband took it upon him himself to chop down OUR mature lime tree, because he thot it was in his way when he was building a fence between our properties . He wanted to do it while we were gone so he had more control. all my beautiful novia plants and my pepper plant was also chopped down even though it was not in his way. Then since we returned he built an open drain to shed the rain water down the hill, but at the end he has it built so it specifically ends up so all the water drains into ourside. Our friend in Canada who is Costa Rican says do not discuss this with your neighbour or he will cause you harm when you return to Canada. My other friend said I should cry in front of them to show that you are sad about this. Also we owe them some money to have our grass cut while we were gone, that they paid on our behalf. I feel angry, but I have not approached my neighbours how I feel. last year I felt they were the perfect neighbours, ie, always bringing us fruits or home cooked food to try, Should I discuss this issue of them cutting my trees or not mention it?
