What is it like to retire in Marseille?

"Life for a retiree in Marseille, can be quite vibrant and fulfilling. The city is known for its rich history, diverse culture, and beautiful landscapes, offering a plethora of activities for retirees. There is a significant expat community in Marseille, providing a sense of camaraderie and support for those who have moved from abroad. This community often organizes social events and activities, making it easier for newcomers to integrate and make friends. Culturally, Marseille is a treasure trove. The city is home to numerous museums, art galleries, and historical sites. Retirees can spend their days exploring the iconic Notre-Dame de la Garde, the Old Port, or the ancient neighborhood of Le Panier. The MUCEM (Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations) is a must-visit for its unique architecture and extensive exhibitions. For those who enjoy outdoor activities, the Calanques National Park is a short trip away and offers stunning views, hiking trails, and opportunities for boating or swimming. The Mediterranean climate makes it possible to enjoy these activities for most of the year. Marseille also has a vibrant food scene, with a variety of restaurants serving traditional Provençal cuisine, fresh seafood, and international dishes. The city is famous for its bouillabaisse, a traditional fish stew that is a must-try for any food lover. Nightlife in Marseille can be as relaxed or as lively as one wants it to be. There are numerous bars and clubs in the city center, particularly around the Old Port area. For those who prefer a quieter evening, there are many theaters and concert halls that offer a range of performances, from opera to contemporary music. In terms of healthcare, France has one of the best systems in the world, and Marseille is no exception. There are several high-quality hospitals and clinics in the city, and many doctors and medical staff speak English. Overall, retiring in Marseille offers a blend of cultural richness, outdoor activities, and social opportunities, making it an attractive destination for retirees from all over the world," explained a retiree in Marseille.

"Their is lots of cultural attractions, recreation and nightlife. I do not know many other expat retirees but that is because I choose to join groups of mostly locals such as a local running club and a local club of bolles (bocci). I enjoy these more then the expat groups since I enjoy learning more from the locals," explained one retiree living in Marseille.
